I (f18) have a couple cats, lizards, snakes and tarantulas, so I frequently make trips to my local pet store. I also occasionally take my bearded dragon with me because she enjoys attention and being on my shoulder as I walk around, after a couple times the employees recognize me and I remember them.
About a week ago there was a guy (late 20s) I’ve never seen before, maybe new or I just never came in during his shift, whatever I thought nothing of it. i go to get crickets and he comes to help me, makes small talk about what animals i have and such. he was nice and gave me the crickets and i went to get whatever else i needed. he was at the register and at this store they always ask for your phone number so that you can get points and rewards, i put it in the pin pad thinking absolutely nothing, pay and leave.
A couple hours later I got a text along the lines of “Hey this is – from the pet store!” I was super confused and kinda creeped out? The next morning I called the store and spoke to a manager, then told them what happened. When I brought this up to my brother he said I should’ve just ignored him instead of potentially getting him fired. i only said anything because i’m not sure how their system works and if they can see personal information that’s linked to my account, but i have my address, number and cards on it, i also wouldn’t feel comfortable going back to the store so did i overreact?
