A college student in Florida heard something strange and it was coming from the parking lot of their apartment complex. The noise was immediately recognized by the student as a muffled baby cry. She then discovered an abandoned new-born in the back of a truck. The baby was cold, hungry, alone and had a soiled diaper.
The college student called the police and they thought the baby was only a week old. The baby, who later received the name Charlie, was rushed to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital’s emergency room. The respiratory therapist, Lorraine, who would change his life, was waiting for him at the emergency room.
Lorraine assessed his breathing and it was alright. He was fine despite of cold, hungry and wet.
Lorraine saw this as more than just a routine procedure. When she cradled Charlie in her arms, she felt a special bond with him. Lorraine said that she believes and became his mother right at that moment. She was certain she wanted to adopt Charlie.
Lorraine, a two-time breast cancer survivor, knew she couldn’t have her own children. But that didn’t stop Lorraine and her husband Charles from dreaming of having a child together.
Charlie was kept in observation for four days. After that, the abandoned baby arrived at his forever home with his new parents.
Lorraine mentioned that it is just amazing and all her prayers are been answered. She called Charlie her angel and miracle boy.
However, the first week having Charlie was challenging for them, especially for Lorraine. She had been part of raising her stepchildren and being a mother to a new-born was just new for her.
Charlie’s adoption has been finalized and formally, he is now their son.
Lorraine shared her thoughts about adoption and said that it is a wonderful thing. She said that there are so many kids out there that need someone to take care of them and become their forever family. She feels that someone doesn’t have to be perfect to be an adoptive parent.
After seven months, the family was able to celebrate their first Christmas with Charlie.
Lorraine said that Charlie is the most precious gift she could have ask for. She is just grateful and humbled to have him.
