Father and Daughter Lose Lives in Head-On Collision with Box Truck

A tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday afternoon, claiming the lives of a father and his daughter in a collision with a box truck on a rural Virginia highway, authorities reported.

The fatal head-on collision occurred at approximately 4:16 p.m. local time on Route 13/Lankford Highway in Accomack County, situated roughly 20 minutes from the Maryland border, according to information from Virginia State Police as cited by The Daily Times and ABC affiliate WVEC-TV.

The driver, 69-year-old Augusto Santos Aguilar, was operating a Mazda CX-30 when, for reasons yet to be determined, he crossed the center line and collided head-on with a Freightliner truck, state police stated. Aguilar was subsequently transported to Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Onancock, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Tragically, the man’s 17-year-old daughter, Alyssa Marie Aguilar, who was seated in the rear of the crossover vehicle, lost her life upon impact, as reported by CBS affiliate WBOC-TV. Alyssa’s mother, Maria Aguilar, occupying the front passenger seat, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Tidal Health Peninsula Regional in Salisbury, Maryland.

The driver of the box truck, identified as 63-year-old Ervin Jose Mizriky, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital.

Following the tragic incident, local authorities closed both directions of the highway, with the Virginia State Police initiating an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. Early images from the scene indicated slippery road conditions.

The family, en route from Florida to Annapolis, Maryland, to visit a relative, was the subject of a GoFundMe campaign launched by Alyssa’s sister, Ivory Cerezo. Seeking assistance in transporting the victims’ bodies back to Florida, Cerezo fondly remembered her sister, a recent high school graduate, and her stepfather.

Describing Alyssa as a “very loving young girl” with a passion for singing, cooking, and dancing, Cerezo expressed her grief. She also highlighted the affectionate nature of her stepfather, Augie, describing him as a loving husband, father, friend, and grandfather known for brightening the mood with his sense of humor.
