Jada Pinkett Smith sobbed on her newest Red Table Talk program as she pondered on the “stiff upper lip” mentality she was taught as a youngster.
The 50-year-old diva has spoken up about her own childhood and the conflicted sentiments she had as a youngster as she ‘bottled up’ her true thoughts.
She believes that her attitude to life has kept her back and left her incapable of properly handling life’s demands – and that this has led to her having a “frightened young girl” locked within her.
The mother-of-two, who is wedded to Oscar winner Will Smith, 53, was presenting an episode titled How Destructive Mothers Harm Their Daughters: Could This Be You?
Willow Smith, her 21-year-old daughter, was on her panel, as was Jada’s mother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, and self-help author Kelly McDaniel.
Jada said to the ladies surrounding her she had to face a lot of unpleasant, mature stuff at a young age. She didn’t have the emotional skills to cope with what was happening. She simply had to ‘toughen up.’ And so, beneath those powerful ladies one sees there’s this scared young girl.” And that’s who she is.
During a brief period of quiet, Jada’s face broke into tears, eliciting empathy from her panelists.

Jada’s remarks came only weeks after her hubby Will notoriously smacked comedian Chris Rock for making a joke about her hair at the 2022 Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.
The 57-year-old comedian made an ill-advised remark about Jada appearing like she was getting ready to play G.I Jane in a film, ignorant of the fact that she struggles from alopecia and the joke being a reference to the fact that armed forces people generally shave their heads.
While Jada gasped and rolled her eyes at the joke, Will rushed the stage and smacked Chris. He immediately returned to his seat, yelling, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f&#%ing lips!”
But, shortly afterward, all seemed forgotten and forgiven as the A-List filled audience cheered, screamed, and gave Will a standing ovation as he was named Best Actor and proceeded to the stage to accept his award.
