The 59-year-old babysitter was arrested in connection to murder, although police think the exposure was unintentional.
Pamela Graves has been charged with criminal murder and possession of a schedule II controlled substance after a kid in her care died as a result of drug exposure.
According to Law & Crime, EMS replied to a report about an unconscious 15-month-old kid in Athens, Georgia, last Friday evening. Zamiya Kelly, the child, was transferred to a local hospital and hospitalized after testing positive for fentanyl, opiates, and benzodiazepine exposure, according to authorities. Kelly was subsequently declared deceased.
Graves, 59, was babysitting for the infant when the exposure happened, and “the Investigation shows that Graves had illicit drugs in the sight of the kid, which led in the exposure,” according to investigators.
According to a news statement, “preliminary investigation shows that the kid’s death was caused by exposure to illicit substances.”
Athens-Clarke County Police Lt. Shaun Barnett said that it is not thought that the narcotics were supplied to the kid on purpose. Yet, the specifics of how the infant was introduced to the illicit substances are still being investigated.
Graves was taken into custody on Monday, but the investigation is still underway.
