A TikTok video depicting the victory prom dance of the prom king and queen is going viral for all the bad reasons.
The video, which was shot at a 2017 Texas senior prom and posted by Celeste Orozco on Thursday, has already received 16 million views. It shows the DJ playing Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” for the chosen royalty.
“When your legs don’t work like they used to,” Sheeran says in the first line of the song.
However, prom goers audibly gasped at the phrase from the 2014 big single as prom queen Sarah Mendenhall sat in the midst of the dance floor – in a wheelchair.
“If I were the DJ, this would haunt me for the rest of my life,” Orozco remarked on top of the scenario, which has over 2.8 million likes and 44,900 comments.
“The DJ knew exactly what he was doing,” one person said, while another added, “That’s f – ked up dude.”
“He said, ‘Hold up, I’ve got the perfect music,'” recalled another.
“The girl who came in second slipped the DJ a $20 to play that,” another speculated.
“There’s no way,” one person remarked.
“I would have walked out,” said another.
“I work as a wedding DJ. “Ouch,” one user confessed. “We can’t know every song’s lyrics, but dammit.”
“I forgot the music started like this,” one user commented, claiming to be the DJ in the video.
“I would have been so ashamed that I would have simply sobbed and left.” “I’m hoping this didn’t spoil her night,” another person expressed sympathy.

Fortunately, this was not the case.
Mendenhall penned, ‘Hello all, this is Mendenhall. I thought that was incredibly funny and sarcastic. I didn’t realise what was playing until much later since I was (attempting) to dance.’
‘Had a fantastic prom night and a nice laugh about it the next day,’ Orozco wrote, assuring them that Mendenhall was “her best friend” and asking them to “seriously stop with the hatred.”
