A Venice mother who was hit by a car while carrying her eight-month-old in a stroller, an event captured on film, says she is enraged by the young driver’s punishment.
The rented automobile was being driven by a Palmdale resident who had just turned 16 the day before, didn’t have a license, was intoxicated, and was on probation for another event.
The time the automobile hit the woman, who wished to only be recognized by her first name, and the stroller, tipping them over, was recorded on video. Following the August 2021 incident, the driver attempted to escape.
He hit them. He had no desire to slow down, Rachel said. He did slow down after he hit them, and she suppose that’s because he noticed the incoming vehicle, which rammed him into the telephone pole.
As per Rachel, the 16-year-old was assessed for narcotics at the spot and tested positive for marijuana and Xanax. Rachel is convinced that this was not a mistake.
She’d want to think that someone she don’t know would not willfully try to murder her and her child, but after learning on Sunday that the boy had a past felony record for poisoning a female in his high school, there’s just no question, Rachel said. The mental toll on her is just that it’s incredibly difficult to put one’s brain around somebody wanting to murder one.
Rachel’s kid, now a year and a half old, had a tire mark on his skull and, while not being gravely hurt, struggled from day and anxiety attacks for two years after the event.
Rachel had a back laceration and needed stitches on her right elbow.
The driver, a teenager, was charged with two counts of felony assault and one count of criminal abandoning the scene by the office of Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón. The now-17-year-old was sentenced to a juvenile probation camp for 5 to 7 months.
Rachel, who voted for Gascón but now backs the recall attempt, finds the penalty ridiculous.
Everyone can agree that they require to alter the system drastically, but she don’t comprehend why law and order can’t coexist with reform. Why does it have to be either/or? Rachel stated.
Gascón’s office claimed in a number of tweets that disinformation about the event had spread and that there was no proof of “attempted murder.”
Instead, the District Attorney’s office tweeted: Sadly, opponents are seeking to profit from this tragedy by exploiting the victim to forward the erroneous assumption that this punishment is related to the DA’s criminal reform programs. In reality, the office was only following California law.
Gascón’s office stated that they understand Rachel’s family will be affected for the rest of their lives and that Victim Services has been contacted.
However, Rachel stated that her family is leaving L.A. County due to this event, the absence of justice, and the truth that she does not feel secure.
