Officials said a hiker from New Hampshire died Saturday morning after falling from the peak of a mountain and plunging hundreds of feet down a cliff while taking photographs of the region with his wife.
The event occurred at 10:30 a.m. on the peak of Mt. Willard in Crawford Notch, New Hampshire.
The hiker’s wife heard her husband shout and turned to see him tumbling over the side of the mountain down a steep precipice that extended to the bottom around 800 feet, according to the agency.
His wife dialed 911 for assistance when she was unable to reach him because of the difficult and slippery conditions on the peak.
At approximately 2:30 p.m., rescue workers came and rappelled down the cliff, where they discovered the fallen hiker around 300 feet below the peak. At the site, the hiker was declared deceased.
Mountain Rescue Service members pulled the deceased hiker off the rock wall and hoisted him to the summit.
Rescuers then transported the corpse down the mountain to the trailhead parking area, where they arrived around 6:45 p.m., according to authorities.
Authorities withheld the hiker’s identity and other personal details until his family was notified.
There were no other details available at the time.
Mount Willard, at an elevation of around 2,865 feet, is located in the heart of Crawford Notch, near the village of Hart’s Location.
