Fierce 101-yr-old woman from Maine is still lobstering with no plans of retiring.

Most people look forward to retirement, but not this woman.

Virginia “Ginny” Oliver has spent most of the last 90 years working on lobster boats.

Ginny was born on Claredon Street in Maine in 1920 and still lives there. Ginny and her late husband acquired a house on the same street where she was born; it is the place where she raised her 4 kids and where the grandchildren enjoy visiting.

The woman began her lobstering profession at the age of eight. She would join her father and brother on the boat, gathering lobster and sardines to sell to local industries for processing. They would, though, bring part of their catch home, which Ginny still does. She likes lobster rolls that are created with Maine lobster, a grilled bread, a little mayo, and nothing else.

She is also well-known for her baking skills, particularly her doughnuts, cakes, and brownies.

And Ginny’s family still comes over every week for their mother and grandmother’s baked beans; it’s a Sunday night ritual in the Oliver household. Fortunately, Ginny’s 75-year-old son, Max, just came back home to help support his mom, even though she doesn’t appear to require it.

Ginny is a tough cookie; she is regarded as “The Boss,” and she will not let you forget it; nonetheless, she maintains a wicked sense of humor. When her doctor questioned her why she was still lobstering as a 101 year old her clear and definitive answer was, because she wishes to.

Ginny has been fortunate to have had few wounds over her 90-year profession.

One of her more significant injuries was done by a crab, not a lobster! She claimed that while picking a few crabs to present to her son-in-law, one of them sliced her finger, necessitating 7 stitches. She giggles as she claims that if there hadn’t been a bone in the path, the crab would have chopped her finger off completely.

Virginia is more concerned about the state of Maine’s lobster population, not herself.

That being said, when questioned when she wanted to retire, Ginny firmly responded that it will only be when she die.

Ginny “The Lobster Lady” Oliver has more life in her than many individuals half her age, so maybe that won’t be for long. She also has a yacht called after her, which who wouldn’t want?
