In a shooting in Baltimore on Saturday night, a man was killed and four people were hurt, including a 2-year-old who was shot and a 6-year-old hurt in a collision, according to police.
Around 6:39 p.m. ET, Baltimore police from the Central District discovered four people with gunshot wounds close to the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Laurens Street: two men, a woman, and a 2-year-old boy.
According to Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison, a 6-year-old child was in the car with the woman who was shot and has “critical” wounds after she slammed into a pole. In the car with them was the 2-year-old.
Harrison declared, “This is a mass casualty incident in our city. Five people were shot, one of them died, and children are still in critical condition as a result of a conflict that could have been handled very differently.
One of the men was declared dead at a local hospital after the victims there were transported.
The condition of the other two adults is listed as critical. According to police, the 2-year-old is also in a critical condition. According to FOX 45 Baltimore and Baltimore City Councilman Eric Costello, the 2-year-old was shot in the face.
Authorities are looking for a suspect. There have been no detentions.
Harrison called for witnesses, saying, “What we believed happened was a gunman or multiple gunmen opened fire.” We don’t know if the individuals in the car or those on the sidewalk were the intended targets.
In reference to the larger problem of gun violence in the city, which he called “criminal, cowardly acts,” he continued, “the only way we stop this and solve this is through community cooperation.”
