Officials say a 9-year-old Florida girl died after a palm tree collapsed on top of her as she was playing outside with friends on Sunday.
Deputies with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office informed us that the youngster was playing on a strap linked to two trees in the Smith Farm gated enclave in Lake Worth Beach when one of them collapsed on her.
Palm Beach County Fire Rescue responded just after 6 p.m. to a report of a cardiac arrest in the 6500 block of Marbletree Lane.
The child and a 9-year-old boy were brought to Delray Beach Medical Center, while a third individual was sent to a nearby emergency facility.
The daughter was eventually confirmed dead, but the child is likely to live. The degree of the third person’s wounds was unclear at the time.
The girls’ parents informed investigators that they were playing on an obstacle course when the disaster occurred. Her identity has not yet been revealed.
Detectives subsequently determined that the tree had some decay within.
Authorities stated the incident looked to be an accident, but an investigation is underway.
