In Michigan, Bentley Boyers is 2 years old, and he was born with a cleft lip. Even at that young age, his father knew that he would start to feel different from others because of it.
One day, as the father was out at the Jackson County Animal Shelter searching for chickens to add to his small collection of barnyard animals, he came across something he certainly had not expected. It was a puppy, and this puppy too had a cleft lip.
Said Ashley Boyers, Bentley’s mom: He looked at the puppies just because, and he called me on FaceTime and said ‘hey, I think this puppy has a cleft lip’ so I looked at him and I said ‘you need to get her, we need her’. “So he ended up asking the ladies if she was up for adoption and said ‘my son has a cleft lip, I wanna adopt it for him’, and they said ‘well I guess it was meant to be’.”
So the puppy was adopted and named Lacey. And now Bentley is just head over heals, absolutely loving his new friend. “Lacey” the mom said, “is his everything.”
Bentley has so far had two surgeries to close up his cleft lip and will have another one when he gets a little older.
Said Ashley: “As of right now he’s practically fine, he’s the happiest kid ever. He’s the most open, loving kid ever.”
And she believes the bond between her son and Lacey will only get stronger as time goes by. After seeing the two together, how could it not?
