We’ve all had times in our lives when we wanted to change things about ourselves, but that can be a lot different when someone else wants us to change. and change can be a great thing… but at what cost?
When someone tries to change you, especially if that someone is your significant other, you might want to take a step back and analyze why this is happening, and why that person wants you to change.
One young couple, we’ll call them Crystal and Mike, had a nice, long relationship. But that relationship was scarred deeply when Mike would point out every single flaw that made up Crystal. He would tell her she was wearing too much makeup. So she stopped wearing it altogether. He told her he like women with short hair, so she kept it cut short, right above shoulder length, at all times.
When Crystal wanted to try something different, she dyed her hair red, and Mike told her she looked ridiculous. So she dyed it back to her original blonde. Mike told Crystal that he despised all her tattoos and piercings, so she took out all the piercings and didn’t get any more tattoos. He would point out every time she looked like she was gaining weight. So Crystal started eating less and less.
Crystal did everything she could to make Mike happy, but, in doing so, she lost something very important… her confidence, and a piece of her soul.
In time, Mike left Crystal for a younger girl… one who apparently had fewer flaws. A short time later, Crystal grew her hair out, she died it red, and she got a new tattoo and wore her piercings again. And she started to regain her lost confidence, and started acting again like the woman she was meant to be.
The break up hurt… it hurt a lot. Losing Mike was a painful thing. But Crystal quickly realized that losing Mike wasn’t nearly as painful as losing herself.
