Just being there can make all the difference in the world, and when one needs help, your presence and your gestures can go a long way.
The next time you see a stray cat, you might ask yourself, “I wonder if that cat has ever had an owner,” or “I wonder if that cat has ever been loved.” Because, if it’s a stray cat, it may never have known what love is.
Cotton the cat had lived his entire life on the streets, far from ever having a close relationship with any human. He was extremely malnourished and his once beautiful fur coat had been eaten up by mites, and because of those mites, his eyes were scabbed over so badly that he couldn’t even open them.
Cotton was in terrible shape, and he was very close to dying when Carmen Weinberg took him in. Carmen, who works for Animal Friends Project Inc., cared for Cotton the best she could.
Says Carmen: “It must have been so scary for him out there, not being able to see. He was all alone and so skinny because he couldn’t find food.”
Carmen fed Cotton and nurtured him… and loved him. And, over time, the cat began to regain his strength and was starting to get healthy again. She also used a special cream to treat Cotton on his fur, and after awhile, the mites were gone, and he stopped scratching himself so much.
Says Carmen: “I’m sure so many people passed him by because of how sick he looked, but he was just waiting for someone to give him a chance.”
And then, after receiving so much love and care from Carmen, Cotton finally opened his eyes, and what beautiful eyes they were. One was hazel and the other was blue. And Cotton could see again. And he was finally able to get a good look at the woman who did NOT pass him by. She was the woman who took him in and cared for him, and virtually brought him back to life. And he could now see… the woman who loved him. And he returned that love to her.
When photos of Cotton were posted, Carmen received NUMEROUS applications from people wanting to adopt him, because NOW he was such a beautiful cat. Nobody ever wanted him before… but NOW so many did. Carmen decided to keep Cotton for herself, and, really… who could blame her.
Adds Carmen: “My advice is to please not ignore them. Anyone can help animals.”
And that sounds like pretty good advice to me.
