Unfortunately, there are a lot of thieves in this world. And some like to take advantage of people by offering construction work, and then they take the money and run. That happened to Sarah Ibbotson, of York, who has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and is confined to a wheelchair. She is also terminal.
A few months back, she hired a man to modify her kitchen and add onto her home a downstairs bathroom and bedroom. He started the job after taking her 41,000 pounds and then he disappeared.
When builder Roy Allen came by to give her his estimate for the work, he was shocked by her story, and his heart sank. How could anyone take advantage of this woman, he wondered.
Says Roy: “I’ve honestly never seen anything like it. I felt so sorry for her. What a drastic position she was in, I wanted to do what I can to help.”
So what he did… was do the work … for free.
Says Sarah: “There are not enough words to say how grateful I am [to Mr Allen]. It’s overwhelming, there’s no reason for them to be so kind. I’d just like the work finished so I can enjoy the bit of time I’ve got left.”
