Skyler Retting of Texas was in a bad car accident in 2007. Last year, he died from complications caused by that accident. He was 30 years old, and he left behind two little girls: 7-year-old Gypsy and 6-year-old Story. They were devastated by their father’s death.
This past May, the young girls launched a birthday balloon into the air, carrying a note from each of them to their dad.
Gypsy’s note read: “Dear daddy I miss you so much if you got this balloon then you are the best. I love you and Story too. Please watch over me and everyone in the family. Love, Gypsy.”
Story’s note read: “Dear dad, we want to go up with you, we miss you so much. We want to go and hug you, and do all of the things you do. Love, Story.”
Some four miles away, in Colleyville, a suburb of Fort Worth, 49-year-old Lance Dunahoe found the balloon with the notes in his yard. After reading them, he went inside his house and gave his two sons, 11 and 13, a big hug.
Says Lance: “When I saw these notes, I was very much aware of how precious my children are, and the time I spend with them… that can change any moment.”
Lance posted the notes on Facebook and a friend of the girl’s mom connected the two of them. By then, young Story, who suffers from epilepsy, was in the hospital. The next day, Lance showed up at the hospital with the balloon and the girls’ notes. And he had tears in his eyes. “I’m a daddy also,” he told the little girl.
After meeting with the girls and their mother, Lance created a GoFundMe page to help with their financial issues. The response to that, he said, has been overwhelming.
