Water beads are one of several types of sensory-based toys that are popular today, and they may be entirely safe if a kid plays with them while supervised by an adult. When they come into touch with water, they swell to the size of a stone.
Sadly, it was precisely because of this that Kennedy Jane ingested it. The bead swelled to half an inch after being ingested, finally ending up in her intestines and rupturing them.
Her mother finally became aware of the baby’s pain when she quit eating regularly.
She didn’t eat anything for two days, Mitchell explained. By the time they arrived at Portland Hospital, she was still on the stretcher and vomiting bile.
The bead clogged her small intestine, causing it to expand so enormous that it seeped into her body, causing sepsis and an infection, the infant’s mom continued. This week, she’s undergone three operations. Her lungs, heart, and kidneys were all in distress.
In the interim, a family friend put up a GoFundMe for the family’s necessities, including Kennedy’s treatment at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit while also caring for her three siblings.
Kennedy Jane has been in the hospital since October 31, but she is apparently improving. Her body is still battling various illnesses, and she has surgery set for Wednesday.
Her mother had no idea such a simple object could be so harmful. The product is obviously a choking danger, as the warning label states, yet Mitchell had no idea it could hurt her daughter’s organs as badly as it has.
Parents don’t have the opportunity to make an informed decision before purchasing, Mitchell added. She would never have bought these and taken them into her house if she had noticed toxic, if consumed, can cause obstruction.

Kennedy Jane’s mom is now advocating for clearer warnings on water beads so that what occurred to her daughter does not happen to others.
