WNBA star Brittney Griner was sentenced to nine years in jail on Thursday after a Russian judge found her guilty of narcotics use and smuggling.
In addition, she was fined one million rubles.
Russian prosecutors requested the court to condemn Griner to 9.5 years in jail. The defense then began its case. Griner may face up to ten years in jail.
Griner apologized ahead of his punishment.
She would want to apologize to her teammates, her club, her supporters, and the city of (Yekaterinburg) for her error and the shame she caused them, she added. She also wishes to apologize to her parents, brothers, the Phoenix Mercury organization back home, the incredible ladies of the WNBA, and her incredible spouse back home.
