Early one recent morning, Officer Austin Lynema spotted a young boy running. He was chasing after his bus after missing it. But the bus was too far gone. The officer pulled up to the boy and asked him if he needed any help, and the boy told him he missed his bus and his mom didn’t have a car to take him there. So Officer Lynema parked his car and walked with the boy, named Thomas Daniel, to ask his mom if she would mind him taking her son to school. Of course, she said yes.
During the ride to school, Thomas told the officer that it was his 9th birthday, and that he was going to have a party at his house after school. And he invited the officer to come to it. He also told the officer that he was bullied at school, and he was worried that none of his schoolmates he invited would attend the party.
After dropping Thomas off at school, Officer Lynema went about his regular patrol. But later that day, he made sure to show up at Thomas’ birthday party. Sadly, the officer was the only one who showed up to it. Only Thomas’ brother was there. And aside from the schoolmates who did not show up, there was no cake.
But the very next day, Officer Lynema showed back up at Thomas’ house with some friends of his own from the department. They were waiting for Thomas when he stepped off the bus. And they brought Thomas a Krispy Kreme Donut birthday cake and some presents for the followup party. The officers even sang Happy Birthday to him. Thomas told all of them it was the best birthday ever.
The Grand Rapids Police Department posted about Officer Lynema’s encounter with Thomas, along with some pictures of all of them having fun. The department also posted a special note with it. It read: “No kid should get bullied, and no kid should worry if anyone will come to the party. Next year Thomas Daniel, make sure you drop us that invite a little sooner. We wouldn’t want to miss it!”
