A tragic incident unfolded in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood on Monday as a firefighter, Andrew “Drew” Price, aged 39, lost his life while battling a building fire, according to multiple reports. Price sustained fatal injuries after falling through a light shaft in the burning structure, as reported by the Associated Press, Chicago Sun-Times, and NBC affiliate WMAQ-TV.
The unfortunate event occurred during the morning when Price, who was on the roof for ventilation purposes, fell through an opening and landed in the basement, as disclosed by Chicago Fire Department (CFD) Commissioner Nance-Holt to the Sun-Times. A mayday call was issued, leading to the rescue of Pice by his fellow firefighters. Subsequently, he was transported to the Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he succumbed to “significant injuries.”
In an official statement on X (formerly Twitter), the CFD confirmed the news and expressed sorrow over the loss, stating, “On behalf of the Fire Commissioner, it is my sad duty to report the passing of our member injured this morning at 2430 Lincoln.” The department also provided details about Price, a firefighter and EMT who joined in March 2009, served with Truck 44 since 2015, and would have turned 40 in January.

While the cause of the fire remains undetermined at this early stage, CFD spokesman Larry Langford mentioned to the AP that investigations are ongoing. The damaged four-story building reportedly housed 12 apartments on upper floors and the Lincoln Station bar and grill on the ground floor, according to ABC affiliate WLS-TV.
Benn Hamm, the owner of Lincoln Station, expressed deep sorrow, stating that Pice’s death is “absolutely devastating” and emphasized the gravity of the situation given his personal connection to firefighting through his brother.
On Wednesday, CFD conducted a procession for Pice, escorting his body from the Cook County Morgue to the Drake & Son Funeral Home. The department announced a televised service scheduled for Monday and thanked the public for their condolences, urging everyone to keep Price’s family in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
