It’s not too often you want to lend a helping hand to a rat…ummm… a real rat… not like your brother-in-law. But in Germany, even Fire Department rescuers could not just let this one go. It would seem this one rat was not just an ordinary rat that could scamper anywhere it wanted to go. This rat… was a fat rat. And it realized just how fat it was when it tried to crawl up through one of the holes in a manhole cover.
It got stuck. Big time. So several volunteer firefighters showed up at the scene to extricate the rotund rodent. It squealed and squealed as the firefighters worked with the manhole cover to devise the best way to remove the female rat from it.
Says Michael Sehr, one of the firefighters: “She had a lot of winter flab and was stuck fast at her hip — there was no going forward or back.”
And some might certainly question why the firefighters would spend any time helping such a despised creature. Michael summed it up by saying: “Even animals that are hated by many deserve respect.”
So after a little time and effort, the firefighters were able to free the rat from its iron girdle and let it run free. And it ran right back into the sewer.
Better, I suppose, than running into a nearby house.
