Kai is a dog. One day just after this past Christmas, he was found at a railway station in Scotland tied to some luggage full of his toys and belongings. It’s a crime to do this in Scotland.
Kai, a Sharpei mix, was turned over to the Scottish SPCA – the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Inside his suitcase, workers found a pillow, some toys, some food and his water bowl. Kai had been microchipped, and workers felt he had been physically abused by the owner who gave him up. He also had a serious medical condition.
The microchip led authorities to the owner who had Kai in 2013, and he had sold Kai to someone else since then. Through investigations, they learned the new owner tried to sell the dog through a website to a woman for 400 pounds. But that never happened, because the woman quickly realized that Kai was not the dog in the photo on the website. But the man quickly rode off in his car, leaving Kai with the woman. So she tied Kai up with the suitcase of his belongings in the rail station. He was not her dog, and she didn’t know what else to do.
Kai was in need of a quick surgery and staff at the SPCA did not know how to handle that financially. But when word got out about it, the group collected more than 2,500 pounds from strangers to pay for it. The operation was a success and soon Kai was healthy again. And not long after that, many called in wanting to adopt Kai and give him a loving home. Finally, Kai was adopted by a hydraulic engineer named Ian, whose previous dog had passed away just before Christmas.
Says Ian: “My Dalmatian named Mica passed away just before Christmas and I was left heartbroken. I had her for 15 years and she was the apple of my eye. We pretty much spent 24 hours a day together. When I heard about Kai I knew the little guy needed a break but I never thought in a million years I’d get him. I called the Scottish SPCA just to check to see if he was okay and see if there was anything I could do to help. Fast forward a few weeks and here I am taking him home.
I honestly think it was meant to be. It feels like fate that I’ve been able to rehome Kai and I’m not usually a believer in things like that. I’m over the moon and very shocked that I was chosen out of everyone who wanted him.”
But, as Ian said, it looks like it was just meant to be.
