Back in 2016, 81-year-old Louis Mapp began rocking babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital in Mobile, Alabama.
He would rock, feed and burp any infant who needed to be cradled in some loving arms. And Louis quickly became addicted, saying “I love to look at their expressions when I rock them. This one is smiling at me right now, and it just makes your day to do that.”
Nurses at the unit help thousands of babies every year, and parents are so grateful for them. Louis so loved all the babies he rocked and the nurses at the unit that he donated a million dollars to the unit.
That was quite a shock for Nurse Manager Renee Rogers, who said, “For him to come with his time alone is fabulous, but then the donation! It was massively surprising.”
With some of the donation, the hospital was able to buy Leo Beds, which are used for babies that weigh less than a pound, up until they are a pound and a half.
