The New York Police Department is being criticized on social media after a viral video shows an officer hitting a lady in the face, knocking her out.
The terrible event allegedly occurred on August 12 in Harlem, but the video is just now making the rounds online and it reveals a bunch of cops in the center of a throng. According to the NYPD, they were seeking to apprehend a suspect in relation with an attempted murder.
The scene is complete mayhem, as you see one cop push the woman away from the mob, to which she appears to push back.
That’s when the officer steps back and delivers a devastating strike to her face. She quickly collapses on the pavement.
People on the scene were stunned, with at least one guy exclaiming at the officer, “Why would you do that?!”
It’s unclear if she passed out, but officers got her up on her feet and in handcuffs seconds later.
The NYPD appears to be portraying the event as self-defense, stating that several persons on scene intervened by physically attacking various officers as police were effecting the arrest. One cop had a slight head injury.
Two women were accused of attacking an officer, resisting arrest, and impeding governmental administration; one of them was also charged with threatening and harassment; and a third lady was arrested with spitting at an officer.
It’s unknown whether the lady in the video is the punching victim. As of now, the NYPD has not declared any disciplinary action against the officer.
