In Barisso, Argentina, police officer Celeste Ayala was pulling her regular shift as a guard at the Sister Maria Ludovica children’s hospital when something very unexpected happened.
Someone brought in a young, neglected child who was suffering from severe malnutrition. The poor, crying child was described as “smelly and dirty,” and handed over to Celeste. And Celeste did not hesitate in helping that child. She sat down, pulled out a breast, and began feeding the little boy.
Said Celeste: “I noticed that he was hungry, as he was putting his hand into his mouth, so I asked to hug him and breastfeed him. It was a sad moment, it broke my soul seeing him like this, society should be sensitive to the issues affecting children, it cannot keep happening.”
The officer’s colleague, Marcos Heredia, took the photo of his partner’s compassionate act and posted it on Facebook.
Celeste received praise from the local fire brigade where she volunteers. An official from the brigade commented: “We want to congratulate the voluntary firefighting cadet Celeste Ayala who yesterday in her job as police officer whilst she was on guard duty at the Hospital, breastfed a young child who arrived crying. Actions like these fill us with pride and obligate us to redouble the effort, the work and the solidarity with our community.”
Celeste was soon promoted from officer to sergeant with the police force because of her selfless act.
Said the minister of security of the Buenos Aires province: “That’s the type of police we’re proud of, the police we want.”
