Princess Diana’s assistant claims that after Harry was born, she wept herself to sleep.

There are still so many stories to be told about Princess Diana. Former personal assistant and butler Paul Burrell recalls a few stories in the Smithsonian Channel documentary Princess Diana’s “Wicked” Stepmother.

While the video concentrates on Diana’s rocky relationship with stepmother Raine Legge, it also includes information about Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles. As we now know, Diana faced enormous strain during her marriage, which is similar to what Meghan Markle endured throughout her time as a senior royal.

Paul recalls what it was like back then. He  could see the fissures in Charles and Diana’s marriage spreading deeper and broader, he claimed. He also claimed that one of her most difficult times was the night Prince Harry was born.

Diana told him that she sobbed herself to sleep the night Harry was born. She knew her marriage was finished, she added, he remembered.

And the prince informed the princess that his mission had been completed. He’d given the country an heir and a spare, and he was now free to restart his connection with Mrs. Parker Bowles.

The events that followed would only add to the royal wedding’s tension. The press obtained explicit phone talks between Charles and Camilla, as well as Diana and a new love interest. Diana’s father passed away at the end of the year.

Paul finds connections between Diana’s experience at the time and Harry and Meghan’s experiences as senior royals. He feels they would have had her complete support had they handled things the way they have.
