In an Instagram post, Prince William paid a moving tribute to his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, expressing gratitude for his ‘Grannie’s’ help throughout his life during tough times.
This is William’s first public statement since the Queen’s death on September 8. She was by his side at his happiest times, and she was by his side at his worst days, he added.
Following Diana’s death on August 31, 1997, her highness passionately shielded the princes and became a mother figure to them. When the news of Diana’s death broke around midnight, the princes were sleeping in Balmoral with their grandmother. The Queen instructed her staff to let the young boys sleep in before alerting them that Diana had died in hospital as a result of the Paris catastrophe.
The family went to church as normal that Sunday morning, but the Queen forbade any mention of Diana’s death from the service. Following the loss of their mother, the Queen shielded William and Harry from painful news about the accident by instructing servants to hide all televisions and radios at Balmoral.
This sweet moment when The Queen stops to say something to Prince William. I think she said Wills 😁💙

For the princes, who grew up very close to their grandmother, the Queen blossomed into a maternal figure. Before the Queen’s 90th birthday in 2016, William paid thanks to his grandmother for all of her help while he was a youngster. Having lost his mother at a young age, it’s been really significant to him that he had somebody like the Queen to look up to and who’s been there and who has appreciated some of the more complicated concerns when one loses a loved one, he remarked at the time.
In his homage, he acknowledged his thanks for all the Queen had done for him and his family, saying she’s been tremendously supportive, and he has truly valued her leadership.
He has had the privilege of the Queen’s wisdom and comfort into his fifth decade. His wife has had twenty years of her advice and encouragement. His three kids have gotten to spend holidays with her and make memories that will last their whole lives, he wrote in the Instagram post.
He expresses that he thank her for the compassion she showed his family and him, and he thank her on behalf of his generation for providing a shining example of service and dignity in public life that was from a different era, but always appropriate to them all, adding, all of the sadness they will experience in the coming weeks will be a testament to the love they felt for their extraordinary Queen.
