Tim McGraw recalls getting emotional while dropping off his daughter in Los Angeles: ‘I lost it’

It is never easy to see your child leave home and begin their own life. Just ask Tim McGraw.

The country musician, 55, recounts his emotions when assisting his oldest daughter, Gracie, 25, with her transfer to California. On March 13, the father of three spoke on Audacy’s “Rob + Holly” podcast and said that it was “difficult at first” to let his daughter leave.

He added that he believes it’s usually tougher on mom than on dad, but there were a lot of tears.

McGraw, who has two more kids with his wife Faith Hill, Maggie, 24, and Audrey, 21, went on to relate the touching tale.

When his daughter went to Los Angeles, he traveled cross-country with her. He took all of the seats from his Cadillac Escalade and filled it up with all of her belongings, he said.

That was a great bonding moment for the father-daughter pair, but it wasn’t without its problems.

He said that he just lost it when he dropped her off. So he had to drive home by himself and was sobbing the whole time.

McGraw’s next album will contain a new song about the emotional experience.

He recounted that he contacted his guitarist, Bob Minner, on the way back from leaving Gracie off and was just having a heart-to-heart about sending his kid off.

Gracie appears to be following in her parents’ musical footsteps, as she sang a song from the Broadway blockbuster “Wicked” on Instagram last summer.

Audrey, McGraw and Hill’s youngest daughter, appears to have inherited her parents’ singing abilities as well. In August 2022, she posted an Instagram video of herself singing Pat Benatar’s 1981 classic “Fire and Ice.” Audrey also starred in her father’s music video for “7500 OBO” in 2021, kissing her male co-star in one moment.

McGraw expressed his understandable response.

He is not going to beat him up, he said emphatically. He thinks he’ll let him off the hook on this one. He can tell one that it’s not easy for a father to watch.

And McGraw was overjoyed when his daughter Maggie received her master’s degree.

“We are so incredibly proud of our Maggie May!!!! She graduated from her Masters program at Stanford University this weekend and what a celebration!!!” McGraw said in the description of his Instagram image.
