The premiere date for Disney+’s version of the classic story “Pinocchio,” starring Tom Hanks as Geppetto, has been announced.
The film, a live-action remake of Disney’s 1940 cartoon masterpiece, will be released globally on Disney+ on September 8, 2022. This is timed to coincide with Disney+ Day, the Mouse House’s annual celebration of the streaming service, which debuted last year. In addition to “Pinocchio,” Disney added that other Disney+ Day premieres from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic will be announced “in the coming months.”

The Disney+ Day announcements will lead up to D23 Expo: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, which will take place in Anaheim, California, from September 8 to 10, and will include “exclusive encounters for fans and subscribers,” as well as debuts of original stuff from iconic brands.
“Pinocchio” is directed by Robert Zemeckis. Hanks plays Geppetto, a wood craftsman who makes and looks after Pinocchio (Ainsworth) as if he were his own kid. Gordon-Levitt plays Jiminy Cricket, Pinocchio’s adviser and “conscience”; Erivo plays the Blue Fairy; Key plays “Honest” John; Bracco plays Sofia the Seagull, a new character; and Luke Evans plays The Coachman. Kyanne Lamaya as Fabiana (and her marionette Sabina), Giuseppe Battiston as Seor Stromboli, and Lewin Lloyd as Lampwick round out the group.
The film is produced by Zemeckis, Derek Hogue, Andrew Miano, Chris Weitz, and Paul Weitz, with executive producers Jackie Levine, Jack Rapke, Alexandra Derbyshire, and Jeremy Johns.
Additional upcoming live-action remakes of Disney animated flicks involve “The Little Mermaid,” which will be released in theaters on May 26, 2023, and “Peter Pan & Wendy,” which, like “Pinocchio,” will be a Disney+ exclusive.
Guillermo del Toro’s stop-motion, musical adaption of “Pinocchio,” starring Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Gregory Mann, Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, and John Turturro, will be released on Netflix in December 2022
