Will Smith describes his marriage to Jada as a “sloppy public experiment in unconditional love” during a book talk

Will Smith made a public appearance alongside his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, in her hometown of Baltimore. This marked his first public response to her recent revealing book. The actor, aged 55, joined Jada during a talk at the Enoch Pratt Free Library, where he shared heartfelt sentiments about their relationship, describing it as both “brutal and beautiful” and a “sloppy public experiment in unconditional love.”

The event, featuring a conversation between the 52-year-old actress and CNN’s Laura Coates, had an unexpected onstage appearance by Jada’s family. Towards the end of the talk, Will, their children Willow (22) and Jaden (25), and Will’s son Trey (30) from his previous marriage joined Jada on stage, adding a familial touch to the event.

Will expressed the challenges and joys of their enduring relationship, saying, “We have had a very, very long and tumultuous relationship. We call it ‘brutiful.’ It was brutal and beautiful at the same time.” He also acknowledged the sacrifices Jada made for him and their family, and how her support helped him realize his dreams.

During his speech, Will praised Jada for building a strong relationship with his ex-wife, Sheree Zampino, which allowed their children to spend time together as a family.

He posed a thought-provoking question to the audience, “Can you show up and love somebody for the rest of your life, even when you don’t agree with them?” Will concluded by promising to stand by Jada for the rest of his life and thanked the audience for providing a platform for Jada to express her voice.

Earlier in the evening, Jada had also addressed their relationship during a conversation with Laura Coates, reassuring the audience that they are in a good place and have no intention of parting ways. She emphasized their enduring commitment to each other.

Will’s emotional speech followed a playful video he posted on Instagram, light-heartedly addressing recent revelations about their marriage.

In a recent interview with NBC, Jada disclosed that she and Will had been separated since 2016 but had not publicly announced it until now. However, she made it clear that divorce was not on the table, and they considered themselves life partners.

Jada’s memoir, “Worthy,” was released recently and explores their ongoing journey to understand and redefine their relationship. It’s available for purchase wherever books are sold.
