Willie Nelson is one of the most well-known artists living today. For almost six decades, the renowned country singer-songwriter has been creating amazing songs and is still going strong.
Nelson reached a huge milestone on April 29 when he celebrated his 90th birthday — and he celebrated in style. Hundreds of music luminaries from yesterday and now gathered over the weekend for a two-night performance extravaganza honouring Willie Nelson’s life and music.
The concert was one of the most anticipated musical events of the year. From April 29 to 30, LA’s famous Hollywood Bowl amphitheater was filled with a diverse range of artists, all gathered for a single purpose: to pay tribute to Willie Nelson.
Neil Young, Kris Kristofferson, Dave Matthews, Keith Richards, Lyle Lovett, Kacey Musgraves, Chris Stapleton, Rosanne Cash, Snoop Dogg, Ziggy Marley, Beck, Sheryl Crow, The Lumineers, The Chicks, Norah Jones, Tom Jones, Leon Bridges, and Nelson’s kids Lukas and Micah were among the performers this weekend.
These musicians represent several generations and musical styles, demonstrating Willie Nelson’s international popularity as a performer.
It didn’t matter if one were a hillbilly or a hippie, everyone was a Willie Nelson fan, actor Owen Wilson remarked during the event. As a kid growing up in Texas, it felt like there was nothing bigger than Willie Nelson, and looking out at the Hollywood Bowl tonight, it continues to seem like there’s nothing bigger than Willie Nelson.
Lyle Lovett told that he played his 60th birthday special, 70th, 85th, and now 90th. Every time he had worked with him, he’s been such a wonderful person and performer. Willie throws the spotlight on everyone in his band, including his family. Willie sheds his light on everyone, and he has a really giving attitude.
Norah Jones remarked that what she love about Willie is that he just likes to play with people, and that’s the most fun there is.
She just always love seeing him, and popping on stage is always the most special, but he’s just charming and amusing, and a good person.
Meanwhile, the man of the hour was content simply to be present.
He wishes to thank all the artists who came out tonight to help celebrate whatever it is they’re celebrating, Willie Nelson quipped to the audience.
The all-star roster sang renditions of several of Willie Nelson’s best songs throughout the two-night event, and at the conclusion of both nights, the 90-year-old superstar joined the stage to play his own classics.
Nelson’s repertoire on Saturday featured a duet with Neil Young on “Are There Any More Real Cowboys?” and a performance with Snoop Dogg of “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die.” He also sang his popular songs “On the Road Again” and “Will the Circle Be Unbroken? and I’ll Fly Away” with the whole cast of the performance.
Willie Nelson, who is 90 years old, is still going strong and will go on a new tour this year. Last year, he released his 72nd studio album, A Beautiful Time, which won the Grammy Award for Best Country Album.
He is now nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
