A shocking video from New York City captures a homeless guy snatching a 3-year-old girl from her grandma and fleeing in broad daylight in the Bronx on Monday.
Good Samaritans helped and saved the 3-year-old from the grip of 27-year-old Santiago Salcedo – before witnesses said that the homeless guy strolled back across the street to his scooter, looked at bystanders who phoned the cops, and then drove away. Later that day, cops apprehended him.
At 1:20 p.m., surveillance footage recorded from the BP gas station on the junction of East Tremont and Baisley avenues in Schuylerville reveals a 65-year-old mother holding hands with her two baby grandsons on one side and her 3-year-old granddaughter on the other. A man is spotted approaching the gathering at the corner with a comforter slung over his shoulders and back like a shawl. He abruptly reaches down and snatches the girl, wraps her in the blanket before fleeing.
The grandmother chases after the guy and her grandchild, yelling, he’s kidnapping her girl. He’s going to take her girl. He’s kidnapping her child, per Fermin Bracero, a 63-year-old gas station employee who was sweeping outside at the time.
He was sweeping the street and noticed a woman walking with three children. All of a sudden, this guy jumps across the street and throws a blanket around the little kid, Bracero stated. He tried to cut out, but a crowd got in the way, so he dropped the young child.
Statement from the workers said that the granny was screaming. People are going insane out here. This man just grabbed up the small child, covered her in a blanket, and began jogging with her. He didn’t go very far since so many individuals attempted to capture him.
The woman’s two young grandkids stood at the corner, one of whom can be seen in the video furiously hopping up and down. Videos show a vehicle pull into the gas station just before the suspect takes the girl and drives across the lot. When he sees what is happening, he gets out and walks in their direction. A little time later, the homeless suspect reappears on the screen, strolling across the parking lot with only his blanket in hand, while the other guy seems to contact 911 and return to his car.
Cops discovered Salcedo asleep in the doorway of a local restaurant hours later. According to cops, Salcedo informed detectives that “voices in his brain” urged him to abduct the girl. The youngster was not hurt, however she was sent to a nearby hospital for assessment.
He was detained and charged with abduction, attempted kidnapping, illegal confinement, and harming a child’s welfare. Later Monday evening, a shackled Salcedo was brought out of the 45th Precinct and into a police cruiser, smiling at journalists assembled outside the station.
