Alison Lapper lived out her childhood in foundations. She was not unlike others and was born without arms and shortened legs for the reason that is known as phocomelia. She miscarried four times and assumed that becoming a mother was not a possibility for her. But when she became pregnant again, she knew that she was not going to miscarry her baby. This time she was very fit and healthy and everything in her body and brain was just alright.
She was firm and left the thought behind that how would she support and look after a baby on her own as a single mother as she was abandoned by her husband. Alison overcame everything that came her way when her son, Parys Lapper came into her life and she was not going to let anything stop her from being a loving mother to her baby.
Despite all the odds stacked up against her, Alison decided to keep the baby. While she was pregnant, she even posed for Marc Quinn, who created a marble sculpture of the woman who didn’t need four limbs to turn her life into an inspiring story. The sculpture was displayed at Trafalgar Square from 2005 to late 2007.
She felt incredible when her baby was born and she was not able to express her emotions. She had never imagined that she was going to be a mother as she thought it could never be a possibility. Her baby was born healthy and seems liked a blessed miracle. She was just overwhelmed the moment nurse placed her baby on her shoulder and she gave a little kiss on her baby’s head.
Alison Lapper continued her journey with her son and charted out her career as an artist. She received a first-class honors degree in fine art at Brighton University and was awarded an MBE for services to art. She was even awarded an honorary doctorate at Brighton. But out of all these achievements, she was most proud of her son and considered him as her greatest piece of artwork and creation.
What Alison Lapper never anticipated was to have her son taken away from her before she could see him make his way through adulthood. Heartbreakingly, her son Parys Lapper died unexpectedly when he was just 19 years old. Her late son was intimidated by his schoolmates about his mother’s disability and she was told by police that her son may have pass away of an overdose.
As a grief-stricken mother, Alison Lapper had one hope for her son’s ultimate journey. She has conveyed a dear wish that she would completely love to see as many loud Motorcycles as likely to escort her son on his final journey from her home to the crematorium. She sought to rejoice her son’s life and believed that he would have loved this too.
But after fighting hard to raise her son, it’s an incredibly painful barrier that has now separated the mother from her son forever.
Alison Lapper said about her relationship with her son that they have been through a lot together. She was the only person who has been constantly there in his life since the day he came to this world. She further said that she never let her disability to create a barrier between them.
