The 57-year-old actor has never been so busy. The actor has so much going on in his life as he is presently juggling his hit action drama “9-1-1 Lone Star”, two podcasts and of course his family.
Rob Lowe opens up in one of his most candid interviews about his three decade long journey.
It was just a diverse world overall when he featured in his first feature film, “The Outsiders”. But the start of Rob’s career was also the start of his fight with addiction.
He began to find it tough to distinct that who he was from the characters he was playing. This was highly the case in his role as Billy Hicks, the lovable rogue in the 1985 film, “St. Elmo’s Fire”. The character becomes so indistinguishable with it and this is he was during his early twenties – wild, fun loving, rock and roll and having a heart with gold.
Bad behaviours came in along with his rise to fame. A low point came in Rob’s carrier when he was involved in a sex scandal. It was on this decline to rock bottom that he had experienced moments of reckoning. One of these came when he was just 26.
He came home late after a night of celebrations to find a voicemail message on his machine from his mother. She said that his grandfather had a cardiac arrest and begged for Lowe to pick up but he did not turn up.
This was the moment that made Rob realise that this is not the way to live. He realised that alcohol and drugs were only going to make that next to impossible. He began a process of self-reflection and checked himself into rehab at age 26. He’s been sober ever since.
A big part of Rob’s recovery was Sheryl, his wife who he met while working on the 1990 erotic thriller, “Bad Influence”. He saw something special in her and had the feeling that if he ever going to be able to make it work with anybody, it was her.
Rob calls their relationship as one of life’s greatest miracles. The duo wedded in 1991 and welcomed two sons Matthew and John.
When Rob’s son John fought with his own addictions, Rob played a part in his son’s sobriety. Throughout his struggle, Rob never gave up on him and he was always there. John gives all credit to his father and Rob was the reason that now he is sober and living a healthy lifestyle.
It was one of the best experiences of John’s life when he took his first year chip and he and Rob spoke at a meeting in front of 200 people. Rob recalled similar feelings as he was there for his son. This incident coupled with his own personal journey, has left the actor feeling the most satisfied he ever has.
Rob said that he has never been happier, personally or professionally and there’s not a day that goes by where he is not thankful about it all.
From the age of 26 onwards, Rob has devoted in self, spirituality, his family and marriage and it was not that easy for him. Rob said that no one has a perfect life but he is grateful for whatever he has.
