The grandparents of a seven-year-old Virginia girl face murder charges after their Rottweiler mauled her to death.
Olivia Grace Floyd was killed by the four-year-old dog on January 29 at her grandparents’ house in Waynesboro. She was taken to the hospital in an ambulance however died as a result of her wounds.
If convicted of non-capital murder, involuntary manslaughter, child abuse, and ownership of a deadly dog, step-grandfather Stephen Kachmar, 60, and grandma Penny Lee Bashlor, 64, face up to 70 years in prison.
According to the Waynesboro Police Department, the girl’s parents, Brooks Anthony Floyd, 39, and Alicia Rene Floyd, 37, face lesser charges of cruelty/injury to a kid, which carry a five-year penalty.
According to authorities, all four were detained on Friday after an intensive investigation and an indictment by a special grand jury.
Both grandparents and the dad are awaiting trial in a Middle River Regional Jail cell, while Alicia has been freed on bond.
Another lady was hurt in the incident, although she was not identified by authorities. Authorities removed and killed the dog.
According to investigators, the 120-pound Rottweiler has a background of aggressive assaults.
As per reports, on September 11, 2020, a 23-year-old Waynesboro man was strolling along Parker Heights Road when a Rottweiler ripped free from a woman’s leash and attacked and bit the pedestrian.The bite victim characterized the dog as “extremely aggressive” in the report. According to a family relative, the assault left a lasting scar on the man’s chest.
The dog was isolated at home for 10 days, however no charges were brought against him.
Olivia’s obituary described her as a second-grader who enjoyed cheering, gymnastics, dancing, unicorns, and animals.
Her family asked that guests attending her burial dress in “compatible with a party,” including the kid’s favorite colors pink and purple.
