As Amber Heard’s team continues to present witnesses in the ongoing Johnny Depp defamation lawsuit against her, actress Ellen Barkin testified as part of the actress’ defense via video deposition.
In a 2019 video, the “Animal Kingdom” actor discussed her “sexual” relationship with Depp in the 1990s, after the two collaborated on “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.”
She stated that they basically built a connection over time that lasted, she thinks, maybe 10 years, a little less if they met in the ’90s, adding that the friendship went up and down living on opposite coasts.
When she relocated from New York to Los Angeles, the connection “grew romantic in nature,” she said, and Depp “turned the buttons,” meaning the bond changed from a completely platonic acquaintance to a romantic one. She amneded herself to to change it to sexual.
She saw him “three or four times a week” for “many months” throughout their sexual connection. When questioned if she knew of Depp’s involvement, she responded yes she was always aware that he drank excessively. He was inebriated the majority of the time. He liked to drink red wine.
However Barkin stated that she was unaware of his using prescription drugs, she stated that he used “hallucinogens, cocaine, marijuana” in her company “all the time.” She claimed he was usually drinking or smoking joints.
While asked if she had ever seen him “out of control,” she stated he once “threw a wine bottle across the room, the hotel room, on one occasion in Las Vegas when we were filming Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.” She said it occurred amid a brawl between Depp and his pals or maybe an aide. While the bottle did not touch anybody, she said Depp hurled it at her and a group of others.
She then proceeded to refer to Depp as “simply a jealous man” and “controlling,” with frequent queries such as, “Where are you going? What are your plans? What did you do the night before?”
She had a scratch on her back once that got him extremely furious since he swore it was caused by her having sex with someone who wasn’t him,” she added, adding that he was controlling and possessive. He could sometimes be furious and demanding, she continued.
Barkin claimed Depp stopped the relationship, and she hasn’t heard from him since.

The actress’ account was also used during Depp’s UK libel trial, when Depp rejected the charges “false” and stated that Barkin harbored a “enmity” against him. He explained that she wanted more than a friendship, she wanted a true relationship with him, and he didn’t want that. He didn’t feel the same way about her as she felt, and he assume from that moment on she got very, very upset, and he haven’t spoken to Ms. Barkin since then.”
Depp is demanding $50 million in damages after Heard asserted in an op-ed in the Washington Post in 2018 that she was a survivor of domestic violence. While she did not identify Depp in the article, his attorneys claim it was supposed to be about him and harmed his career. Depp was countersued for $100 million.
The actor already lost a case in the United Kingdom over the identical piece that was published in The Sun.
