Sometimes the world may be a terrible place. Although we appear to have become much better at criticising prejudice over the years, there is little question that it still persists.
Maybe one of the consequences of social media is that individuals can now abuse and attack others online while hiding behind the anonymity of a computer. Unfortunately, in most situations, the perpetrators get away with it.
One dad lashed out at trolls who criticised a video of his daughter enjoying her birthday cake. The video shows Megan Gavin, who has Down syndrome, getting dirty after eating her cake, yet trolls referred to her as a “downie” and a “retard.”
Nonetheless, proud father Scott from Merseyside, England, was shocked after sharing the video to honor Megan’s first birthday. He expressed that his astonishment went directly to rage. Clearly, he wants to discover these individuals.
But after a few hours of sitting and pondering, he decided he wasn’t going to let some moron irritate him and spoil his baby’s day. So he has turned it around and determined that from now on, he is going to teach the uninformed fools. He is going to spread the love, and he is going to do it by posting images of Megan.
“Kids in Africa are hungry, and you’re wasting cake on a youngster too idiotic to know what it is,” one commenter on the video said.
Scott, who has five other kids, says he’s heard similar stories from other parents of disabled kids. He added that they hear that all the time from the mothers, and it’s sad. He is not sure why people perceive them differently.
Scott is definitely not alone in this regard. It irritates him that those who mock others since they are different may get away with it as they are hidden behind a computer screen.
The simple reality is that they would never say these things if they were truly afraid of retaliation, making them as cowardly as they are, simply, dim-witted.
