In Georgia, a 20-year-old fireman lost his life while sleeping while on his first shift.
Newly recruited fireman Efren Medina died while doing his duties on Saturday, April 17, according to the St. Marys Fire Department.
The young man died in his sleep in the firehouse while working his first 24-hour shift, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

Efren had attended to a medical emergency that day with his squad, and when they had gone back to the firehouse to sleep, they were unable to rouse him up until many hours later.
Action News Jax quoted Fire Chief Tom Lackner as saying: “Just don’t know why he wouldn’t wake up… He was medically cleared. Don’t know; everything came back clear.”
According to a GoFundMe page created to help Brittany Vasquez, Efren’s wife, he was “extremely compassionate, pleasant, and industrious. Efren was committed to training to be a firefighter and compassionately assisting others as an EMT.

To date, the campaign has generated more over $10,000 to assist his wife in paying for the service, travel, and any further unforeseen expenses.
