On Sunday, Iva Vest celebrated her 105th birthday with 70 members of Albuquerque’s Los Altos Christian Church. West was born on July 25, 1917, and celebrated his 105th birthday late last month.

She donned a pink tiara and outfit to her birthday celebration to symbolize her status as the birthday girl. The color pink was chosen as the motif for the celebration because it reflects good health and femininity, something Vest has always valued.

She became overwhelmed when she witnessed the gathering for her birthday. She  was very overwhelmed. She  saw friends she hadn’t seen in a long time, she remarked.

On the occasion of her 105th birthday, she learned that she had become a great-great-great-grandmother. Her great-great-great-granddaughter was born on the day of her milestone birthday, thus the infant was named Iva in her honor.

Vest had been married to her husband for more than 55 years. The couple was blessed with three daughters and seven grandkids. Vest has had the rare distinction of witnessing her family grow by a few generations.

Iva is from a generation that saw modernity firsthand. She remembers riding horses to school since vehicles were a novelty that not all possessed at the time. In 1934, she and her spouse graduated from high school together.

Vest attended a rural school, which meant that the entire school attended class at the same location. She grew up on an Iowa farm without electricity until she was 12 years old. What were they doing before that? They used kerosene lights and lanterns, Vest adds.

Vest stated that hitting 100 years old felt wonderful, and that each year afterwards has seemed like an added bonus.

She didn’t have much to say about her secret to living such a long life. She did, however, encourage folks to “attempt to live a happy life and eat healthily.”

The 105-year-old was raised as a lone kid and dreamed up several imaginary companions. She also enjoyed playing with dolls, many of which she still has a collection of and believes her great-grandchildren would like them as much as she did.

She’s given a lot of life advice throughout the years. Her daughter recalls her mom told her, treat others the way you want to be treated.

Her intelligence is as bright as ever, even at her age. Vest is also concerned about passing down family traditions and recipes in order to keep them alive and thriving!

It’s lovely to see her family and community come together to celebrate her landmark birthday.
