When we become parents, we take on a duty that we have never felt or contemplated before.
Simply put, our lives no longer revolve around us. Sure, we may still do many of the things we did before we were called ‘mom’ or ‘dad,’ yet having a kid makes you understand – sometimes for the first time – that you are not the center of the universe.
With that in mind, it’s hardly surprising that we love our infants completely. They can drive us insane, make us question our sanity, and leave us thinking how we’ll ever live till they’re old enough to care for themselves.
At the end of each day, though, I dare any parent to look at their sleeping child and believe that their own life would be better off without that tiny angel in it.
Some people would do everything to hear their kid laugh one more time, to hear them whine or scream in anger, or to watch them rip apart the apartment on their own.
Consider the parents of Luke Meyveci, a young child from New York with a bright future ahead of him. His parents adored him in the manner that only adoring parents can.
They had no idea that heartache was just around the corner.
Luke was reportedly getting ready to celebrate his third birthday when their life was flipped upside down. Luke, a 2-year-old boy, went to sleep on Friday, October 14, and never awoke. He died two days before his third birthday as a result of difficulties after heart surgery.
Michelle Barnathan posted on a GoFundMe campaign on behalf of Luke’s bereaved family:
Luke was the happiest, nicest, most loving young boy who, with his large gorgeous eyes and lashes, brightened up every room he stepped into. He made an indelible effect on everyone he encountered. He enjoyed going to school, driving his vehicles, and watching Spiderman. He was Amelia’s greatest little brother and the most lovely tiny newborn boy.
He fell to sleep and sweetly passed to Heaven in their arms, the statement added. They never expected this to happen to their child in their wildest dreams.
As of this writing, the GoFundMe campaign had raised $54,973 of its $60,000 target.
Luke’s family went from preparing his birthday to having to arrange his funeral in the span of one unfathomable morning.
Luke’s mother, Ashley Di Cairano Meyveci, sent a message for her son on the day he would have turned three, October 16. It said that they shall honor him now and every day. He is the most gorgeous guy, and it’s been amazing to see him grow up over the last three years.
The bereaved mom shared four wonderful photos of Luke, recalling him as a bright, carefree little kid who remained happy and joyful to the end.
Luke, you sweet, sweet boy there are no words to describe how much you will be missed. You brought so much love and light…

I can only imagine how much agony Luke’s family is going through right now. It’s unimaginable to lose a kid so quickly; we’re sending our thoughts and prayers their way.
