Pope Francis visited St. Paul of the Cross Parish in Rome in April 2018. During the question-and-answer session with the local kids, an emotional and unforeseen event occurred when a young boy called Emanuele approached the microphone.
He clammed up and stood there paralyzed just as Emanuele was going to voice his question. He is not going to be able to do it, he sobbed.
The pope was both gentle and straightforward, “Come to me, Emanuele. Come and whisper it in my ear.”
With the help of a papal assistant, Emanuele had the bravery to approach the pope on the podium and express his inquiry. For a few brief but dramatic minutes, the duo murmured an exchange to one other.
As the pope addressed the parish youngsters, Emanuele sobbed his way back to his seat. “If only we could all cry like Emanuele when our hearts ache like his,” he remarked.
According to Pope Francis, he asked Emanuele whether he may share the boy’s query with the rest of the congregation. Yes, Emanuele said.
