A group of California women has stepped up to assist a 4-month-old infant whose police officer mother was shot and died in Palm Springs on October 8.
Lesley Zerebny, 27, was investigating a domestic disturbance call when she and two other cops were shot. She’d worked with the Palm Springs Police Department for about a year and a half and had recently returned to work after maternity leave.
More than 500 ounces of breastmilk were donated to Zerebny’s family on October 11. The milk was donated by a group of ladies in Northern California’s Monterey area, and it will be vetted and tested before being delivered to Zerebny’s 4-month-old daughter, Cora.
A lady only named as Ashley spearheaded the campaign after seeing a plea for prayers on social media and inquiring if the family may benefit from donated breast milk. Yes, that may be useful, she was informed, and within a day, a month’s worth of milk was brought in coolers.
Ashley explained that she simply desired to do the right thing in a horrible circumstance.
If additional individuals want to contribute, the Palm Springs Police Officers Association suggested sending Enfamil infant formula to the agency.
The accused in Zerenby’s death, 26-year-old John Felix, was caught later after a gunfight with cops. He is anticipated to be convicted with the deaths of Zerebny and her companion, Jose Gilbert Vega, a 35-year police veteran who was about to retire.
Felix began firing with an assault weapon while Zerebny and Vega were conversing with him via a screen door at his home. After being treated at a neighboring hospital, a third cop who was injured is recuperating from his wounds.
It was the first time a Palm Springs police officer has been slain in the line of duty since 1962.
The funerals for Zerebny and Vega were set for October 18.
