Ashton Kutcher made news in 2019 when he abruptly lost his ability to see, hear, or walk. He is now speaking out about his ordeal.
Kutcher revealed his horrific, life-threatening medical condition on the very first episode of Paramount+’s new health series, The Checkup With Dr. David Agus. According to his doctor, Dr.Agus, Kutcher’s sickness is vasculitis, a dangerous and rare autoimmune disease that destroys and inflames the blood vessels.
He awoke one day with blurred eyesight and couldn’t see anything. His hearing was knocked out, which threw off his equilibrium and balance, and he couldn’t walk. He had vasculitis, which all are well aware of, Kutcher said in the interview.
Vasculitis causes the walls of blood vessels to harden, reducing blood flow. When the blood arteries in the ears are compromised, this can cause major consequences such as blood clots or organ damage, as well as hearing loss.
Vision loss can also occur when blood vessels around the eyes are damaged. Dr. Agus noted that vasculitis may affect anybody, whether they are in excellent or bad health, and that the impacts can be short or long-term.
There’s a standard one habituated to in life, like being able to see properly, Kutcher said of his own experience with the medical incident. And then one can’t see, like if one has this obstruction and one can’t see. And then he is like, ‘Why aren’t you talking louder because I can’t hear you?’ One wishes to recover one’s previous level of health.
The actor, now 44, also spoke with Dr. Agus about how he started to recover.
Part of it is this mental thing he has about making a full recovery after waking up in the hospital. He was unable to walk and he thought if he can go from not being able to walk to running a marathon in a three-year timeframe, then he can let it be a part of the past and be like, ‘I’m back. “I’m OK,” Kutcher replied, referring to his November marathon race in New York City.
Michael Kutcher, Kutcher’s twin brother, has cerebral palsy. In a later segment of the broadcast, Michael joined Ashton to describe how his bond with his twin gave him an gratitude for life that is, in some ways, an unfair advantage at life.
He continued that when one has this face to face with mortality at that age, one quickly locks onto, ‘Let me accomplish as much as I can while I can ’cause I don’t know when it’s going to be over.’ What are you doing now, given that you have the chance to be alive? The values of where he spends his time, which is usually with his children. Probably the most important shift.
Kutcher and Dr. Agus also talked about the amazing progress the actor has made in his recovery over the previous three years. The doctor emphasized how “amazing” the actor’s recuperation had been, while also thanking his wife for her encouragement.
Ashton began by thanking Mila Kunis for her help, saying, she’s the finest.
Ashton and Mila met while filming That 70’s Show in the early phases of their professions and notably did not date until years later, in 2012. The couple married in 2015 and had 2 kids.
While Ashton Kutcher’s experience is frightening, it is vital to remember how crucial such medical talks are and how essential our loved ones may be in these circumstances.
