Heather Owen and her 8-year-old daughter were having lunch at Biscuitville in Greensboro, North Carolina. For the mother and daughter, these lunch meetings have become something of a ritual.
Heather said that her daughter always goes to the restroom while they are waiting for their dinner. Her daughter decided to go to the restroom by herself this time, and she felt safe knowing she was within sight.
Heather saw a guy sitting nearby who looked to be observing her as her daughter went to use the washroom. He then stood up, went to the washroom, and leaned against the wall.
Heather started to keep a close eye on him. One does not want to pre-judge someone, she said. She thought to herself, perhaps he truly is going to use the restroom.
Nevertheless, when her daughter went out of the bathroom, the man tried to grab her, and that’s when a total stranger, who had been calmly watching the whole thing develop, decided to intervene.
As Cody Byrd walked in, the culprit was simply staring at the female, and he was completely concentrated on her. And then, when he got up to use the restroom right there (where she went), he was like, he was already not feeling good about this.
Cody Byrd is a computer science graduate student. He may now add “hero” to his resume.
