While promoting his first picture in years, Johnny Depp said that he had ‘no further need’ for Hollywood.
On Wednesday, May 17, the actor made a rare public appearance at the Cannes Film Festival for the presentation of Jeanne du Barry, his first feature in three years.
The picture, directed and starring Mawenn, is also the first to include Depp after his legal fight with ex-wife Amber Heard was settled.
In the defamation lawsuit, a jury unanimously decided in Depp’s favor, ruling that Heard’s op-ed article for The Washington Post was defamatory and awarding him $15 million in compensatory damages for libel and $5 million in punitive damages, the punishment for libel.
The jury awarded Heard $2 million in compensatory damages after concluding that she failed to show all elements of slander in her countersuit.
Part of the Dark Shadows star’s case was that he lost business as a result of Heard’s claims that he assaulted her before and throughout their marriage.
Did he feel Hollywood had boycotted him? One’d have to not have a pulse to feel like, ‘No. None of this is happening. It’s a weird joke,’ Depp said to reporters today (17 May). One feels shunned when one is asked to step down from a film one is working on due to something that is merely a function of vowels and consonants floating in the air.
In 2020, Depp will stand aside from his role as Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts trilogy. During the 2022 trial, Depp said that he would not reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the multibillion-dollar Pirates of the Caribbean series. He has since said that he has no desire to work in Hollywood.
Depp added that he does not feel like he is being boycotted by Hollywood because he does not think about it. He does not have much more need for Hollywood. It’s a bizarre, amusing period when everyone wishes they could be themselves but can’t. They must follow the person in front of them. He wishes one the best if one chooses to live that life.
This Thursday, Depp was all smiles as he walked the red carpet for the first time, waving to the throngs of fans and supporters. The film received a seven-minute standing ovation.
Depp portrays France’s King Louis XV in the historical drama. Pierre Richard, Benjamin Lavernhe, Noémie Lvovsky, Pascal Greggory, Melvil Poupaud, and India Hair also appear.
Jeanne (Mawenn), a young working-class woman yearning for culture and pleasure, uses her knowledge and allure to move up to the top of the social ladder one by one, according to the description. She becomes King Louis XV’s favorite, who, unaware of her status as a courtesan, reclaims his appetite for life through her. They fall madly in love, and, despite all propriety and etiquette, Jeanne moves to Versailles, where her arrival scandalizes the court.
