A New York micropreemie, born 16 weeks preterm and weighing 1 pound, 2 ounces, spent his whole life—over 500 days—under the care of nurses, physicians, and other medical personnel.
Greyson Butler, however, was ultimately released from the hospital on Wednesday.
A lot of sleepless nights, tears, prayers, and cries, his mother, Monae Harper, stated, adding that he is living proof of the power of miracles. Overall, she is smiling a lot since her son is here right now. He’s a miraculous child.
Harper and Greyson’s dad, Jeffrey Butler, were overjoyed to be on their way home from Blythedale Children’s Hospital in Valhalla after more than a year of “roller coaster” emotions following Greyson’s birth on June 27, 2022.
The Bronx newborn was diagnosed with a congenital heart problem and chronic lung illness and was given a 20% chance of life.
Greyson required 15 blood transfusions throughout his hospital stay, which covered five different medical institutions as well as two operations and five episodes of pneumonia.
She was obviously anxious, Harper said of her sentiments following Greyson’s delivery. So, for many days, she thought her son was going home, but then something happened. They were terrified. He appeared to be on the verge of collapsing. He was quite gentle.
When they say roller coaster, they mean it, she continued. Many days are wonderful, but many days are stomach-churning and one can’t even keep ones head up. She knew it was going to be a lengthy roller coaster, however didn’t expect it to be this long.
Despite this, Greyson, who now weighs 20 pounds, was able to overcome the challenges. Doctors are also unconcerned about any neurological abnormalities the happy infant may have had.
“I come in the morning, and I know he’s okay because if I tickle him, he rolls around laughing and throws a towel over his head,” Dr. Dennis Davidson explained.
Greyson’s parents were educated to care for his ventilator and tracheostomy apparatus in readiness for his return this week.
Greyson’s father couldn’t help but think about their arduous journey and how amazing his son has been throughout it all as the family prepares to leave the hospital.
Butler expressed that when children start walking, he may be a bit behind. But he’s completely okay with him. He’s smart and has a great sense of humor.
He continued to say that he believes it’s a miracle story. His son never gave up battling. There have been many times when his son wanted to throw in the towel, but he is like, if his son can—his son’s here every day, never quits fighting—then what is he himself going to stop fighting for?
