Jessica owns Sebastian Design and she makes stuffed animals. One day, a woman named Danielle Munger, of Kimberly, Idaho, contacted her and asked her if she could make a very special doll for her 2-year-old daughter, Brynn.
Little Brynn lost her left eye to a terrible cancer, and her mom wanted to know if Jessica could make a special stuffed animal for Brynn… with one eye. Little Brynn loves all animals but a special stuffed animal for her that had the same characteristic of that one eye would be something very extraordinary for her. So Jessica got to work on it.
Says Jessica: “The whole reason I started making dolls is because I have two girls who don’t really look like sisters and I wanted them to have dolls that looked like them. So when Danielle asked if I could make a doll who looked like her daughter, I just decided I couldn’t say no. And she was so sweet and excited about it.”
Danielle loves her daughter more than anything, and always wants her to be happy and loving… and strong and courageous. But Brynn was starting to realize that she was very different from other little boys and girls. With the one-eyed doll, Danielle was hoping to restore a little faith in her daughter.
After taking on the special request, Jessica said, “To date, I don’t think I’ve ever been asked to create something so tender and meaningful.”
So a short time later, during her 3rd birthday party in March, Brynn was given her very special stuffed animal…. a bunny with only one eye.
Says mom Danielle: “She smiled so big and then she could not open the rest of her presents until we got the bunny out of her box and she could show her off to all her cousins and family.”
It was a magical moment for everyone at the party, to say the least. Brynn quickly named her new friend “Sparkle,” and said, “She matches me!” And later that evening was a special moment as well.
Adds Danielle: “That evening she and I were sitting together reading a book. It felt so good to tell her, ‘Yes, she’s special too. This bunny is sick too and she lost her eye, but she’s still special too.’”
Jessica was so touched by the young girl’s happiness with her creation. Says Jessica: “Getting the pictures from her and also a cute video from her daughter hugging it was quite honestly one of the best things I’ve ever seen. My favorite part of this photo is how she is wearing her Wonder Woman nightgown. It perfectly represents the strength and courage of this little superhero.”
I make dolls, which is not a heroic profession by any means. But recently I was asked to make a doll for a little girl…
