Katie Page of Colorado has had quite a few life changes over the years. She sadly had to leave her married life when she was in her 30s. Then she changed jobs. Then, something really unexpected happened. Her pastor asked her if she would be interested in becoming a foster mom. Well she agreed, but she wanted to do it right, so she attended a lot of meetings to help her embrace the newest chapter of her life.
Says Katie: ‘What I heard that evening about foster care gave me chills and scared me, but it also pulled at my heart in a way I couldn’t stop thinking about it.’
So soon Katie was the foster mom of four children. And it wasn’t long after that that she realized she wanted something more… she wanted to actually adopt a child, and give that child a permanent home. So when Katie’s phone rang one day back in 2016, it was about just that.
A caseworker told her there was a four-day-old boy who had just been dropped off at a local hospital, and he would likely need to be adopted. Katie immediately told her, “I want him!” So she got him, and she named him Grayson.
For 11 months, Katie took care of Grayson as caseworkers tried to track down his birth parents. But no one was located or came forward.
Says Katie: ‘Part of me was relieved that no one came forward, so that he would be mine forever with no opposition. But there was always a pit in my stomach about one day having to tell my son no one showed up at his termination hearing.’
Grayson officially became Katie’s son the day he turned 11 months old. A few weeks later, Katie got another call from a caseworker, saying another child had been dropped off just like Grayson. And that caseworker asked if Katie was interested in taking in the little girl. She was, and she was at Katie’s home in less than four hours.
After comparing discharge papers, Katie realized the name of the birth mother was the same as Grayson’s. Upon more investigations, Katie discovered something pretty amazing. Both Grayson and the little girl came from the same birth mother. They were actually half siblings.
Say Katie: What if Baby Girl had gone to another family?’ We would have never found her or Grayson’s mother. The connection would have never been made! I could not believe the miracle that had just happened.’
Well Katie soon adopted the little girl, and named her Hannah. It’s a special story, but one that hasn’t quite ended. because Grayson and Hannah’s birth mom recently gave birth to another boy. Katie’s life seems to be ever-changing. And she wouldn’t have it any other way.
