Kent Green, a Mesa, Arizona police officer, takes his pledge to protect and serve extremely seriously. One day Kent spotted a homeless man rummaging through a dumpster. He wasn’t breaking any laws but Kent was concerned about his safety. So he had him step away from the dumpster.
He could see that the man’s shoes were so worn, they were practically ready to fall off of his feet. So Kent walked back over to his car, fetched a pair of shoes, and gave them to the man.
Kent is an avid runner, and often keeps extra pairs of sneakers in his car. Jenny Crider, a nearby resident, followed what was going on and decided to take pictures. She then posted them online… and they went viral.
Wrote Jenny: “This man comes by our complex a few times a week collecting cans to earn money from recycling them. When I went to grab our mail, a police officer drove up and got out to talk to him. I honestly thought he was going to ask him to leave and stop going through the trash. When I came back home from getting the mail, the officer had brought out a nice, new pair of shoes to give to the man. It’s the simple, Christlike acts like this that give me hope in this world. Thank you Mesa Police for having such wonderful officers patrol the area!”
Kent was shocked the next day when he woke up and learned photos of him helping the man were going all over the internet.

Says Kent: “I had no idea about that until I started getting text messages and messages from dispatch in the days after. We don’t do it for this, for gratification. We’re not looking for the recognition.… We’re looking to do the right thing — the human thing.”
Kent summed it up pretty well, and maybe that’s how we ALL should be living our lives.
