It was a very sad day in Birmingham, Alabama, earlier this year when police officers gathered along the sides of the streets for a funeral for fallen police Sgt. Wytasha Carter. He had been shot and killed January 13 while investigating a call regarding vehicle burglaries. The day was made even sadder and drearier by the rain falling.
Jefferson County Deputy Sheriff Tiffany Dial stood in that rain on the roadside saluting as the procession slowly moved by. But as she did, something very unexpected happened. A man walked up to Tiffany and held his umbrella over her to keep her as dry as possible while she saluted the fallen officer.
Meghan Blankenship witnessed it and took a photo, as the man shielded Tiffany from the rain for a good 30 minutes.
Says Meghan: “It brought tears to my eyes [for him] to show that much respect and love for another individual.”
And Tiffany said she didn’t even know he was there because she never once turned her head from the procession… and he never said a word to her. The unidentified man walked away as soon as the procession had passed and Tiffany stopped her salute. For Tiffany, the very unselfish act of the man meant more to her than anyone knows.
Says Tiffany: “It meant a lot, in ways you can’t even put into words. It wasn’t just about keeping the rain off of me for that little bit, it meant a lot more than that.”
When the photo was posted online, it caught quite a bit of attention. And the man holding the umbrella was soon identified as Shawn Allen, an attorney who was watching for the procession himself. His act of kindness to the sheriff’s deputy was pretty simple.
Says Shawn: “It was raining and I had an umbrella and she didn’t.”
And ANY of kindness can be just that simple.
